I liked how you connected Bronte's work to Carol Ann Duffy, a post-modern feminist writer. Feminism was something that didn't exist during this time period and I found it interesting that you considered Bronte one of the indirect starters of the feminist movement. One thing that I wish you would have touched on more is the education of Bronte and how that affected the themes in her writing. Since she was very educated her family also probably had a lot of money, which makes it so even though she was speaking against the oppression of women, she was still speaking to a very select group of educated, more wealthy people.
In addition, I would like to expand on a question I posed to you after your presentation. I asked you about what a feminist like Carol Ann Duffy today would say about a woman pretending to be a man just to get her word out. After pondering this a little further I thought about the fact that pretending to be a man was the only way Bronte could publish. You cannot look at her work from a purely feministic perspective because her situation made it so she had to concede in certain ways in order to make the leaps she did when it comes to gender equality.
I found your presentation to be very interesting. I really enjoyed the connections to Carol Ann Duffy as we were all familiar with some of her work. It was a great way to enhance our understanding of Bronte's work. It was great to see all the different types of speech she used since there were so many throughout her works. It was beneficial to see the descriptions of those and know how they created meaning.
I thought the 1994 prompt you chose was excellent, it was very interesting to hear how such a small character could have a large impact on a main theme of the your text. I love the recognition of the fact that she is so important, it helped your presentation flow as it went right into the important themes. I also found your discussion of her voice to be very interesting. The idea of her having to present herself as a man to sell books is compelling, and it's great that you showed us how her voice reflected that and how even though she was educated and sophisticated, she had to be sure to portray those qualities in her writing so people would take her seriously.
